Once again, the Dutch design my ideal utopia. Such a great project on so many levels but honestly, the reason I posted this is because there is a little kid getting pitted on the ramp!
S333 Architecture obviously knows what people want; architecture you can ride a bike on! Sure it's mixed use and Americans could learn a lot from the Dutch, especially NYC's urban planners, but something is to be said about the incorporation of the bicycle in everyday life in Holland that hits me as the future, not the past as US-Bureaucrats want you to believe.
René van Zuuk has finished his Project X house in Almere, Netherlands. I really admire the Dutch design sensibility and his office has built numerous projects that I visited while in Holland in '04. Gorgeous geometry!
Bustler has coverage of the 2008 American Architecture Awards. Established in 1998, the awards focus on new architecture designed in the United States. This covers built and unbuilt works. I've attached my two favorite designs.
Lebbeus Woods has been one of my favorite Architects since I first got into Architecture. His work reminds me of some parasitic intervention in a post-apocalyptic world. Aside from acadamia, Woods has received very little recognition, which is why this article in the Times caught my attention...
These photographs by T. Sobajima of Japanese-architect Norisada Maeda's newest built work are strikingly beautiful. By keeping the space open, the experience of the inhabitant is drawn less to the noisy field of connections at the metal panels. I typically don't enjoy seeing very pronounced hardware, but this is an exception!
UNStudio has released images of their competition-winning revamp of a Rotterdam post office!
The design for the redevelopment of Post Rotterdam incorporates an ambitious mixed-use concept devised to respond to and enhance the original qualities of the existing building. Upscale retail facilities, restaurants, cafés and bars are combined with a luxury hotel, which in addition houses conference facilities and offices. The design incorporates an urban landscape, a vertical foyer, the redesign of the large central hall and a new hotel. These combined elements form a design approach which is sensitive to the monument's existing qualities, while generating a synergetic architectural effect. The programmatic and infrastructural elements create a sustainable development which incorporates a 'green shopping' experience and aims to provide a new urban destination for the city centre of Rotterdam.
I made a post a while back about MoMA hosting a prefabricated architecture exhibit. Well, the time is now, head on over to the Poprally party on the 19th of July to check it out!Click the flier to see it bigger!
Italians do it better. That's so true when it comes to interiors and furnishings. "The Other" is a collection of limited-edition mirrored furniture designed by Studioilse for Baleri Italia. Each piece features an exlusive color and decoration. In my dream world, I'd pick up the phone and custom order one of each.
Below is a video from the offices of the esteemed Brooklyn Foundry in NYC showcasing their design strategy and timeline for the Highline. I can't wait! West Chelsea is quickly uppin' its architecture game!
If anyone was remotely into prefabricated / mobile architecture then you probably know who Archigram was. If you know who and what Archigram was, then you're aware of who Peter Cook IS.Well, Archinect has posted an interview with the renown scholar. Read it over as he discusses architectural education's current state.
A new house, Kuro, by Takuya Hosokai has been added to his website. The way space is defined by edges and accentuated by light is something I've been working on at my current job. It's not an easy task and Takuya pulls it off beautifully.
The controversial CCTV building by Starchitect Rem Koolhaus' cronies at OMA has teamed up with Nike China to display, through a series of digital projections, the Chinese Olympic team's top athletes. We're all familiar with the protests that have occurred surrounding the Olympic Games in China this year. I'm not a huge fan of the way the Chinese government is dealing with Tibet and personally, I feel like this building is using its iconography to pull the wool over the international art and architecture scene's eyes. Essentially, the Chinese government isn't known for its trustworthiness. Now, they have a building that embodies their Communist control over the Tibetan people and due to the building's international recognition, some feel as if OMA should have taken the higher road... Anyway, here's a glimpse into Nike's marketing for the Olympics in Beijing.
Office for Metropolitan Architecture has new images up of their Bryghusgrunden Project. I'm really feeling the new Nordic Architecture lately.
"BRYGHUSPROJEKTET, DENMARK, COPENHAGEN, 2008 A distinctive mix of architecture center, foundation headquarters, residential units, offices, public program and playground facilities "
Snøhetta has some renderings and drawings of their new opera house in Oslo. I love the articulation of the plaza. Wouldn't fly in the states with all the tripping hazards but you know what? It's called "thinning the herd".Beautiful project. It's a shame their WTC project was canceled.
Triple Mint has released the images for HL23, a Neil Denari project. Denari teamed up with developer Alf Naman to create this gorgeous building. That's 2 for 2 Neil! Keep it up!West Chelsea is quickly becoming my favorite neighborhood. In terms of the Architecture at least...
I made a post earlier about Danish Architects Bjarke Ingels Group or BIG. Well, their Mountain Dwellings project in Copenhagen is nearing completion. I'm impressed. Actually, I'm floored at how beautiful this utopian-esque development is. Reminds me of Habitat 67 by Moshe Safdie.I wanna live in one!
This recent project from Schemata Architecture Office is really exquisite. It gets it's name, the 63.02° house from it's apparent alignment with the street. Not sure what the significance of the somewhat arbitrary angle is, but it's an interesting design solution for a contextual condition.
